Was Jacqueline Durran's green dress for Kira Knightly in Atonement inspired by Vera Wang's yellow dress for Michelle Williams at the Academy Awards? Images from NY Post and Time Inc.
Good observation...though I think someone else did that little hip detail before Vera. I loved that dress on Michelle Williams. The color, style, details...everything.
Personally I don't think so, they look pretty different to me. MW dress is retro insipired, where Keira's is from a movie and thus is a lot more costume-like.
I did run across an article saying Durran was based heavily on vintage designs..maybe they were looking at the same inspiration? I think the fabric gathering across the hips is particularly distinctive...I'm not sure I would be a fan of this look on me...
That is a good observation, I never made that connection. Though the hip detail is definitely vintage. See the movie "Laura" (1944) with Gene Tierney. Bonnie Cashin designs a white dress with similar detailing at the hips.
