Conjecture

Hi Sophia!

We (Calamity Jane and I) are going to take you on a surprise date this Sunday. It can be either in the afternoon (no later than 3p) or in the evening (7p). There will be drinks after. :)

~Flutterbyblue & Calamity Jane

p.s. if you absolutely hate our surprise, we'll get you drunk.

What would you think if you got an email such as this? Originally, this Sunday I had a quite night home alone with the most insipidly girly movie, cocktails and popcorn planned. You see, my hubby, the Steelers fan, will be at a super bowl party and I decided that I would stay home to increase his enjoyment of the game (I can be a pest when bored). So, now I will be conjecturing for the next day as to what is instore for me tomorrow night (I chose 7 pm). Here are my current thoughts, random and fantastical as they may be:
  • A superbowl party, at which they will get me drunk
  • Roller derby
  • Burlesque lessons
  • Trapeze lessons
  • Whale watching
  • Mani/Pedi (although how could they think they'd have to get me drunk after that?)
  • Raquetball
  • Driving deep into the suburbs to watch Twilight (again, not need to get me drunk, so unlikely)
  • Glamor Shots
  • Bead shopping
  • Hot air balloon ride
  • Shopping of any sort
  • Cross country skiing
What would your guess be?

Alexander McQueen, McQ for Target

McQ for Target by Alexander McQueen

This is my shopping list for the McQ collection at Target by Alexander McQueen in March. I've recently been kind of obsessed with jumpsuits, so this jumpsuit comes at exactly the perfect time. The little suit will be divine for evening cocktails with new super chunky shoes...this kind of gives me an excuse to purchase those chunky red CK shoes I've had my eye on at DSW! The blogger favorite appears to be the one armed mini dress and I have to agree it is quite divine.

Exploding Frog Soap

I don't know about you...but I could really use some of this exploding frog soap, great for kids, or those who are kids at heart... The soap is a yummy peppermint flavor with a cherry scented fizzy surprise on the inside. I have to have them!

Conde Naste will no longer publish Domino Magazine after the March issue. *SOB* Oh, my beloved Domino Magazine...why are they closing you down! Ugh. What the hell am I supposed to do now for decorating ideas?! Thank God for design blogs, otherwise I might be turning to the Pottery Barn catalog...{shutter}

PS-Just saw that sfgirlbybay posted earlier with almost the same title...great minds think alike!

Absurdities, or My Graduation Gift wishlist, Part I

I *hopefully* have a big date in my near future, graduation from grad school! I've used it as an excuse to put together the most ridiculously absurd collection of potential graduation gifts I've invested my blood, sweat and tears for the last five years, now I deserve something pretty:

Ridiculous? Maybe. A girl can dream, can't she?

Mr. Long's Fabulous Hats

What did you think of Aretha Franklin's hat for the inauguration yesterday? Frankly, as a hat lover I was intrigued. The hat designer, Luke Song, sells hats online under the name Mr. Song Millinery. Frankly, I am kind of in love of his hat series featuring cala lilies, like the one pictured above.

Doesn't this dress look a little like something Joan Holloway would wear?
It could be yours for $373

Blair Waldorf versus Rachel Carr

blair

Anyone else excited to see how Blair Waldorf punishes Rachel Carr on Gossip Girl for being a tattle tale and possibly ruining her dreams of Yale? My prediction is that Rachel with hook up with Dan and Blair will use it to ruin Rachel's career as a teacher.

Cruel and Unusual?

My husband likes to tell tales about feeding lemons to babies. He thinks this is totally hilarious. He warns that if I ever have children he will feed them lemons. I think its kind of mean and I cannot imagine doing that to my baby. Apparently more people agree with him, there is an entire subculture of lemon feeders out there on You Tube capturing the reaction of their babies to the sour surprise. Thoughts?

Wild & Wolf Victoria & Albert Water Bottle

Wild & Wolf collaborated with Victoria & Albert on a series of products, all of which I totally love. The patterns on these items are vintage William Morris, a textile designer associated with the British Arts and Craft Movement. Yesterday I purchased this aluminum water bottle to protect my health and the planet. Love it!

Tiny Dancer

This Post is for the 20 Something Blogger Carnival, "My first kiss:"

I went on my very first date during my freshman year of college with a junior that I met through the school literary magazine. Our first date is what one of my good friends calls a “sneak date,” meaning the invitation was worded in such a way that I thought we were just going out as friends. The fact that I was actually on a date was first apparent when he tried to pay for my dinner, which incidentally, was before we sat down to eat. He had chosen to treat me to fast food Chinese for this monumental moment in my life, my introduction to the dating world. The food was forgettable at best and the conversation was uncomfortable in its attempts at rapid intimacy. The door of my dorm room was promptly slammed in his face when he dropped me off at home, as I was scared to death that he was going to try to kiss me, an incident that was to repeat over and over in the coming weeks.

In terms of low points in my first real relationship, the awkwardness of this first date hardly compares in my memory with the inelegance of our first kiss. My beau’s 21st birthday fell a week or two after our relationship became “official.” We had not been dating long enough for me to feel obligated to buy him much of anything, so I decided instead that I would give him my first kiss as his birthday present. Yes, I really am that cheesy. In fact, I went out and purchased a bag of Hershey’s kisses to wrap up, with a card that said that he was getting kisses for his birthday. I handed over the gift with a knot of anxiety in my stomach. There was no going back now.

We did a dinner and a movie date the day before his actual birthday, I didn’t want to cramp his style by trying to tag along on his actual 21st because he would not have been able to get into many bars with me in tow. I don’t remember where we went for dinner, but I do remember that we saw Almost Famous, and that he made his move during the credits, to the ever romantic backdrop of Tiny Dancer by Elton John. The first attempt was a fly by, he leaned in for the kiss, and I instinctively leaned away to avoid it. I gave myself an internal pep talk: You can do it! You have to do it! Don’t be a tease! So, I was ready for attempt number two, lips squeezed tightly closed into a pucker, eyes sealed shut, a very awkward, tense kiss ensued, completely asexual, like the kind of kiss you would give your mother.

One might think that was the end of the story of my first kiss, and perhaps the end of that relationship. My beau was not so easily thwarted. Assuming that we had broken the ice with the ungainly non-kiss, he said, and I remember this very distinctly, “Lets do this right,” in a breathy voice. Even with this verbal warning, attempt number three caught me off guard, and not in a good way. I was in the middle of actually cringing at the complete wrongness of what he had just said, when his lips met mine again, this time for a French kiss. As he pulled away I was in total shock, which he probably assumed was a good thing. It was not. I had never prepared for the eventuality that he would actually stick his tongue in my mouth the first time we really kissed. It just seemed so wrong, especially as a prudish 18 year old who still felt awkward talking to boys, much less kissing them.

And that was all. Thank Goodness. He quickly took me home, but not before terrorizing me with a goodnight kiss. Our relationship managed to survive my complete inexperience and awkwardness for another seven months. I think it only took me another week to get over my fear of kissing.

Christina Hendricks, I love you, still

I was looking for a picture of Christina Hendricks at this year's Golden Globes and instead ran across some article in the LA Times about how her ass is as big as a holiday ham. It kind of pissed me off, so I am not going to dignify it with a link. Just look at the woman, I think if my husband cheated on me with her I would have to forgive him because she is just so irresistibly sexy.

PS. Does anyone else think that those curls look like extensions?

Into the Night by The Motorhomes

Dear Apple iTunes,
I've suddenly become obsessed with Into the Night by The Motorhomes. Please, please, please make it available on iTunes. I swear it is not because of that gorgeous Swedish lead singer. I know they split up a couple of years ago and the song is more than 10 years old, but seriously, it is going to be huge soon in the US. So, please figure something out.

Kisses,
Sophia

J.Crew Flats, Hello Boring

New J.Crew Flats

Behold, the latest J.Crew Flats. At the end of last year the CEO of J.Crew. announced that they would be lowering the price point of their Ballet Flats, in response to the recession. The flats used to start at $128 and will now start at $98. My mother's response:"Oh great, so that means that they'll make them with cheaper materials." I've not seen them in person so I cannot speak to the quality of the workmanship, but judging by the current examples the design of the new cheaper flats will be DULLSVILLE. Above, the latest ballet flats. Below, a selection of former designs.

Break my Heart and find a Diamond

I recently ran across a post by NOTCOT on Stephen Einhorn Jewelry. The jewelry is fabulous, a collection of substantial modern fine jewelry with a bit of a rock and roll edge. Don't worry, its not all skulls and fangs! There is a great collection of pearl jewelry, commitment rings and more! As if the jewelry was not fabulous enough, they offer the most amazing packaging I've ever seen! You can have your jewels encased in hand painted plaster hearts, which the gift recipient must break in order to retrieve the gift inside!

Best Stocking Stuffers Ever

IMG_3298

I had been eying these fabulous little treats for MONTHS. I tried to convince hubby to let me buy them full price, but he said NO. By the time they went on sale they were all out of my letter! Fortunately, they had the last initial of my best friend who just got married, so I picked up the cute little R napkins pictured above for her!

As it happens, one of Santa's magical elven helpers must shop at Anthropologie too becuase she stuffed my stocking with fabulous monogrammed cocktail napkins with my own initial! Great minds think alike!
