Indirectly ask Sophia

Fiona over at Daddy Likey periodically does posts featuring her answers to question posed via google "keywords" that directed readers to her site. I find this feature fabulously amusing, and after looking over the keywords which sent readers to The Charming Dandy over the last few weeks I knew there were some men out there in need of direction:

Two searchers would like to know: "Do women was their arms?"
Yes...sometimes they do. Personally, I do not.

One searcher queried "Dust your Sweetie"
FYI: after looking around online, I discovered this is the product name for edible body powder.

My response to "Hairless Male Actors" is to tell you that while Mario Lopez (Slater from Saved by the Bell) claims to be naturally hairless...word on the street is he actually waxes. By the way, the most popular page on Charming Dandy is currently my article about if men should wax their body hair.

"How did high waters become fashionable?"
In terms of male fashion, I point you towards Thom Brown.

In response to the search for "Khaki Tuxedos:"
BACK AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER...

"Male Actors' Armpit Hair" is not something of personal interest to me, so there is not really much I can say on that subject.

Finally, "Men Waxing in Champaign" leaves me totally speechless.

I know it is kind of old news...but I totally love this clip of Mary-Kate on Letterman.

Yum! Yum! Haagen Daaz

I was at the grocery store today and saw a sign for a new Haagen Daaz flavor...Fleur de Sel Caramel. Doesn't that sound simply divine? Tragically, they they did not actually stock the flavor yet, so I could not even try it!

While I was on the Haagen Daaz website grabbing this picture I ran across a few other interesting tidbits. First, they have caught on to the "snack size" craze and make some scrumptious looking coffee, almond and chocolate ice cream bars. Second, Haagen Daaz has also taken on the plight of the honey bees, which have been suffering a great deal lately.

What is witty fashion?

Witty fashion has become and increasingly popular term in the fashion media. The term is used indiscriminately, to the point that I don’t think it has any really meaning. None the less, every time I read “witty fashion” I stop and think, what is witty fashion to me? To many it may seem like an oxymoron, but I think witty fashion is possible.

The first problem with the term "witty fashion" is that it assumes all fashion is not already witty. Creativity is a kind of intelligence that is more difficult to quantify and which is not immediately recognized by the general public as real genius. So, I'm assuming that the term witty fashion assumes that there is some other additional factor to the design that is especially thought provoking.

This brings us to the next problem, what differentiates art from clothing? Is an especially avant guard designer more an artist than a clothing designer? Does fashion have to be wearable? Comme de Garcon regularly turns out highly avant guard pieces, which are often thought provoking, but perhaps not always terribly wearable. Is this witty fashion or is it limited edition art in the medium of textile? Most haute couture is worn a very limited number of times, and given the prices it would be difficult to justify if you did not think of it as art.

Witty fashion could also be fashion that manages to be both stunning and highly utilitarian. For example, exercise clothing that looked like street clothing, but could wick away your sweat, deodorize your sweat, resist stains and bacteria, while still remaining comfortable to work out in would certainly be "witty fashion." That designer would be a genius. I also find some of the challenges on the show Project Runway to produce “witty fashion.” During the first season designers were tasked with photographing the city and then using those photographs as inspiration for a piece of clothing. There was the challenge where Austen Scarlet made a stunning dress out of corn husks, it took a highly creative individual to conceptualize and execute such a piece.

The sad thing is, despite the continual overuse of the term “witty fashion,” I see remarkably little that I would truly consider witty walking down designer runways or hanging on department store racks. Hopefully with the new movement towards green technology and sustainability, designer will start to turn out more thoughtful and though provoking pieces.

A few favorites...

I ended up having HOURS in the airport on Sunday and waded through over 1,000 posts in my Google Reader, here are a few of my favorites:

14 June 2008

Rally the Troops!

Having to pay $10 for 2 hours of internet super sucks, but what can I say, I missed you guys too much. The first part of my adventure is over, and the next part is about to begin! So here I sit, in the smallest airport ever, ignoring hubby and writing up a little C&C post before hopping on an airplane.

SO, here is the news:
News item one: One of my BEST friends is up for a an awesome prize over at Store Adore. She is a finalist in their "Favorite Shopping Indulgence" challenge and could win a GIANT Vosges chocolate box. SO-VOTE FOR HER STORY ABOUT HER HONEYMOON SHOPPING TRIP! As an added bribe, if she wins, I will hold my own Vosges give away over here at C&C when I get back in town. Nothing as fabulous as store adore, but chocolate is chocolate and Vosges chocolate is even better than that!! While you are over there, check out Store Adore, it is a pretty awesome website and the founders are really nice! I'm planning on doing a full post on their website at the end of the summer.

Millicent Rogers, Standard Oil Heiress

News item two: Over the last week I've become pretty obsessed with turquoise jewelry. Growing up I thought turquoise was kind of grandiose and gaudy. I would see famous women in 1950s society pictures and wonder, what the heck are they thinking! But, it has been growing on me. Yesterday I purchased a sublime strand of Tiffany turquoise beads, which I plan to make into a necklace with a large white bow closure. I'll be sure to post pictures when it is done.

News item three: Yay for internet Cafes! I hope to supplement the automatic Monday posts with sporadic updates from airports and internet Cafes!

Kisses!
Sophia

Ummm, what?

So far I have been less than impressed with Lauren's taste in men on the Hills, and yes, its sad but true, I am addicted to the Hills. It is kind of like the ghetto reality TV version of Gossip Girl, with less style and more sunshine.

Anyway, I am like a couple of weeks behind because I just watch it on Demand instead of when it actually airs. I remember readings a few weeks about about Lauren's unrequited love for Stephen Colletti and in my head I was like, uh whatever another sleazy grease ball on deck to date Lauren. I was totally shocked with clean teen Chase Adams walked into Lauren's house.
*swoon* *swoon* *swoon*

And, WTF? Now I have to Netflix the original Laguna Beach so that I can stare at Chase...I mean Stephen...

Dear Readers,

I've been super stressed out at work, and getting ready for five upcoming weddings (almost back to back it seems!), and getting Girls Guide to Blogging off the ground. So, I've not replied to many of comments. I have seen that several of you have invited me to stop by your blog. I have also had a few request for blogroll additions. I promise I'm not ignoring you! I will stop by and make blogroll additions soon. On that note, if you haven't asked and want to be added to the blogroll or want me, or other Chic and Charming girls, to stop by and check out your blog, leave a comment.

Kisses,

Announcing the Launch of Girls Guide to Blogging

You may have noticed that I have been a little less diligent in my posting over the last few weeks. I have been spending most of my free time putting together a new blog/resource for the Chic and Charming community and bloggers everywhere!

Girls Guide to Blogging (GG2B) is a resource for those looking to expand and manage their presence on the internet. There are many excellent resources available for bloggers interested in building their site and their brand, but GG2B differentiates itself by focusing on how to excel in niche markets that generally appeal to female bloggers and female readers.

Blogging is quickly becoming a mainstream source of information, especially in time sensitive fields such as news, gossip, technology and fashion. While I don’t believe that blogging will ever completely replace traditional media, it has a major impact on how news, trends and ideas get disseminated. Blogs in female oriented niches have the potential to be influential taste makers, and excellent marketing opportunities for savvy brands. Many small business owners now maintain blogs to assist in marketing their products. Many companies, especially beauty product manufacturers, send out cart loads of free samples to bloggers they hope will feature their products. Leading fashion bloggers are now courted by the largest fashion houses. For example, Chanel recently flew 10 bloggers to Paris for press junket! With hard work and dedication there is no reason that YOU can’t be sipping champaign as you make your way to Paris to be courted by one of the most glamorous companies in the world.

Girls Guide to Blogging provides the basic information and tools need to become and remain successful on the ever evolving internet. Here you will find profiles of relevant social networking sites, reviews of new internet services and tips and tricks to make your e-life easier. We are looking to build a vibrant community of motivated bloggers will to share the expertise to help new comers succeed online.

So, you should go check it out! And, while you are there you should join the Girls Guide to Blogging Community!

Gadget Guru: Google, will you marry me?

I know they maybe large and corporate...but really, no one knows how to give me what I want on the internet like Google. Tonight Google will be announcing (releasing?) a plug and play social media service, Friend Connect. With Friend Connect you will be able to add some of your favorite facebook/myspace like features to your own blog. I am BEYOND jazzed, especially since my newest online project is part social network. I just hope Friend Connect lives up to the hype in my head.
